Happy/Peace
It had been months since he'd last seen Farah and James. But hearing about his best friend's tour around the country meant that he was ending this weird hiatus. He'd driven up to Bethel from the city, where he was now living full-time. He'd let Mia take the house in Huntington since she had more out on the Island. Jeff's job and circle of friends were based in the city, so he found himself a brownstone in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and called it a success.

He pulled up to the address James had given him for the stadium. Parking, he meandered towards the entrance in his usual no-hurry stride, hands in his pockets. He had to admit, he was almost a little nervous about seeing James, and moreso Farah. And even more than that, he was nervous about playing keyboard for James' set that night. But he couldn't think of it that way. He was there to support his best friend and have a good time in the process.

After getting through the security guards, he spotted Farah and almost started coughing at the surprise of seeing her again. He hadn't seen her since before she had her baby and it seeing her now took him by surprise.

"Farah!" he called out, perhaps too loudly, his face immediately flushing. Good thing he had that beard to cover it up.

Farah was excited about seeing Jeff. From the first time she had met him, she had liked him. He had wanted to help her without really knowing her, all because she was James' friend. Then for awhile they had tried to keep track of each other after making friends but it seemed real life had other ideas for them. She was surprised to hear he was divorced (though there was a tiny part of her that...was almost happy?). She had also had her own thing to deal with considering she had been with Grady for awhile and then there was the birth of her daughter to deal with.

But things were different now. She had a beautiful little girl, no man, and a job where she basically followed James and bossed him around at times. It was a lot of fun but it was also a lot of work at times too. Especially before a show when she had a lot of things to take care of.

That's why she could be found at the stadium all ready, talking into a headset as she checked something on the list. When she heard her name being called, she whirled around with a confused look till she spotted Jeff. Immediately the confusion switched to a brilliant smile.

"Jeff!" She called, hurrying towards him. When she got close enough, she threw her arms around his neck to hug him tightly. "You made it!"

He braced himself for when she came running over, then promptly lifted her off the ground in his usual bear hugs. He always liked giving those more than regular ones. After a few seconds, perhaps a few seconds too long, he set her back down on the ground and smoothed out his "PEACE" t-shirt. He was sure that James would make some hippie comment about it, but it was his lucky shirt. He always wore it when he was playing gigs. With washings in between, of course.

"I did," he replied, exhaling his relief. "Took me longer than I expected to get here." He went quiet a moment, just giving himself the chance to soak it all in. "Almost forgotten what you looked like." He gave her a light nudge with his elbow, a joking glint in his eye. "You..." How to pay a compliment without sounding weird? Or gross? Or perverted? "You look good." Okay, not the most eloquent, but to the point.

Farah liked bear hugs and she liked to return them, so she was beaming as she squeezed him back. It didn't matter to her that it was a few seconds too long because it didn't feel long enough to her. When he set her back down, she chuckled as she straightened her own shirt and then the little pack on her hip that was attached to her headset.

"I was beginning to wonder where you were." She checked her watch before focusing back on him, blinking softly. "Me?" She looked down at herself before chuckling. "I guess I'm missing a small belly, huh?" She was as she had lost all her baby weight surprisingly quick.

When he complimented her, she smiled and there was a hint of shyness. "Thank you. You do too."

"Been keeping to myself in the city." He scratched the back of his head. "Been playing a bit with musicians around the city. Looking into possibly starting my own record label but it's just a thought right now." He gave a bit of a smile, nodding. "You. You're also missing the child that was growing in that small belly." He laughed, shoving his hands into his pockets. He looked at her, surprised. He scratched the short beard on his face. More than just stubble, but not quite Grizzly Adams, either. Somewhere in between. "Don't know about that. Feel like I sort of look like shit." He laughed again. "Guess you heard? About Mia and I? Been kind of sucking the life out of me."

"Your own record label? That would be kind of cool." She smiled at him, cocking her hips to the side before laughing at the mention of a missing child. "She's sleeping on the bus while I do some running around. Ava tends to keep an eye on her and James while I'm busy." A twitch of a smile before she noticed he looked surprised at the compliment that she handed him. "Well, if you do, it's nice shit?" She offered with a cheeky smirk.

Then she grew serious, nodding. "I heard and I'm sorry. That has to suck for sure." She sighed. "I've been on my own since a short while before Isa was born." She admitted, wetting her lips.

"Maybe. Just entertaining the idea right now. Could be kind of cool." He smiled and had a flash of confusion at the mention of Ava. He'd forgotten, sort of, that she and James had gotten back together. It was odd hearing her name again, two years after their first go-around. He wondered how seeing her again would be; would it be awkward? "That's good. That someone's around to keep an eye on Isa and the baby," he joked, smiling.

He laughed at her shit comment and nodded in agreement.

With a shrug of his shoulder, he scratched the back of his head again.

"Yeah it did at first. I've gotten used to it." Another surprise. He looked at her, tilting his head to the side. "Weren't you... with some guy?"

"You should. Maybe I would even consider signing up." She smiled, her eyes sparkling a little bit. Farah knew some of the story between Ava and James but she figured James would do what he wanted to do. She would support him and kick anyone's ass if they hurt him. That's what she did. At the joke, she chuckled. "Someone needs to and I need a break from it at times." She continued the joke, glancing down at her papers before looking back up at him with a smile.

"How long as it been now?" She paused at the question before sighing with a nod. "I was but...we were too different. He was...older." Let's not clarify how much older. "I don't think he was ready for a young girl and a baby which is fine. I mean, I got Isa out of it."

"You have to meet her, she's adorable. Wanna hear something funny? I had her the day James' album came out! Talk about good day."

"Really?" He smiled warmly. "Would definitely consider signing you if you've still got the talent you had the last time we spoke. And the club's always open if you want to give that another shot." He nodded to prove his point. "Don't blame you. Had the same experiences in college. Sometimes you just have to do your own thing, on your own."

"How long has what been? Since she and I divorced?" He thought. "I dunno, 3 months maybe. 3 or 4. At least since it's been official, legally. We've been separated since... February. So I've had time to adjust." He put on his best sympathetic face - and he'd perfected that look. It was almost good enough to convince himself that he was sad that she had split from that guy, but he knew better. "Sure she is, given her mother." He smiled and then laughed. "Geez wow, that really was a good day. Sorry I didn't call you or anything to congratulate you about your baby."

"I'm hoping I still have the talent?" She tilted her head, sobering for a moment before she sighed. "I haven't really been playing as much." She had stopped before Isa had been born, honestly. There had been so much going on, it had gotten hard to pick up an instrument and actually play, let alone write. "It's nice."

Farah nodded her head, keeping her own features sympathetic even if there was a strange twitter in the pit of her stomach. "I'm sorry, I wish I had been in touch when it was all going on." She had been so wrapped up in her own stuff though, she had lost contact with a few friends. Then she smiled at him, "Charmer."

"Don't worry about it, you can say congratulations now and meet her." Farah brushed it all off, not having a problem with him not calling back then. He hadn't known.

"Always worked better for me. Just because I'm quiet doesn't mean I'm not present in the conversation though. J learned that I stay quiet because I calculate things in my head. Size up the situation and the people in it." He laughed slightly. "He said it always creeped him out to think that I was 'plotting' my next move."

He smiled, clinking his glass with Farah's.

"To reconciling with good people."

A smile twitched over her lips as she nodded in understanding. "So when you're quiet, you're trying to figure things out?" The smile started to turn into a smirk. "So does that mean I'm easy to figure out?" Since they didn't seem to have a problem with conversation. Then she laughed. "Probably did. Every time someone is quiet for a little too long, he thinks they are up to something."

After clinking their glasses, she sipped her drink as she looked around the bus and then back at him. "It's too bad you couldn't come with us for awhile."

"Usually. Trying to size up a situation. Happens a lot at parties... I always stay on the sidelines until I figure out who I wanna talk to, what to talk about, that sort of thing." He laughed, giving a light shrug. "Maybe. Or you're just easier to talk to than most people." He smiled at her, looking at his glass bashfully. "Kinda has a reason to think that way though," he said, his voice a little sad. "Happened a lot to him as a kid."

He raised his eyes to her and cocked his head.

"I know... Hadn't realized it was going to be so much fun." He cleared his throat shyly. "Maybe he'd let me play a few more."

Farah felt a little flutter in the pit of her stomach when he told her that she was easy to talk to. "Thank you." She murmured, smiling shyly at her glass before she took a long sip to make herself feel a bit more stable at the moment. "I tend to delve right into parties, kind of flit around till someone catches my attention and then I'll linger." She paused, before nodding slowly with a sigh. "Never fun."

"He probably would." She smiled brightly at Jeff. "Plus there are always jobs around here." She chuckled softly, glancing over at the baby and then back.

"No need to thank me," he replied quietly, smiling. "It's why you and J get along so well. He's the same way. Floats from conversation to conversation, person to person. Always kinda envied him for that ability." He considered Farah pensively. "Can't say I've ever seen you at a large party... at least not enough to get a good idea of how you work the room." He sipped his drink, taking larger gulps.

Jeff looked confused for a moment. He looked at her, his head tilting, then to the baby, then to Farah.

"...You mean...?" he half-asked, motioning to the sleeping bundle in the basket.

"That's because we met under strange circumstances and I wasn't really going out very much by then." Because she had been pregnant and well, Grady hadn't done the whole party thing. He didn't like her being around other guys at times. "I'm sure you'll see some of it now, sometimes. Though not very much, I suppose, since I'll be here with her." She nodded at the bus and then at her daughter.

"Oh, well no. I just meant you could find a job playing for James and...well, I mean there are times where I might have to run to do something and someone can sit with the baby. But I wasn't suggesting you play nanny." She seemed flustered.

"Yeah... that's true," he said thoughtfully, looking back at his glass. It seems they were both in weird places when they had met - Farah was pregnant and dating someone, Jeff was amidst trying to salvage a failing marriage... he was glad that they'd reconnected, now that things were different. And better. "You go out and party with all the guys after the shows at all?"

He couldn't stop the smile from spreading across his lips at her getting flustered.

"I'd really like that," he said softly, "Helping to take care of your baby... I mean... if that's... what you meant." He felt himself getting a little tongue-tied. "Always liked kids."

Farah was glad they had reconnected as well. Somehow it felt fresh, like it was different this time as she was feeling nervous butterflies that she hadn't noticed before. She didn't look too closely at it, not that the moment. "Once in awhile but it can be hard with having a baby." She admitted, glancing at her daughter before looking back before she got flustered.

Then she looked surprised, blinking at him softly as she felt a bit of a shy blush creeping into her cheeks. "You...really?"

"There were days I wouldn't see them... they'd hole themselves up in one of their apartments and just..." he stopped, shaking his head. "Can't talk about it anymore. I'll hurl," he joked. Funny how things hadn't really changed over time.

Her asking if he was okay made the redness increase. He looked at her, suddenly panicked that she'd seen something weird on him.

"...Y-yeah... Yeah I'm ok... why wouldn't I be.. ok?"

"Yeah, it sounds like it hasn't changed much then." Farah nodded, looking amused. "Sometimes I have to send him texts threatening I will send in the bodyguard guys to drag him out if he doesn't hurry his ass up." Then she laughed. "Okay, okay, we'll stop talking about it now."

There was something weird and she had to wonder why it was that he was blushing so much at being this close to her. "I...don't know?" She offered.

"Here, I'll let you out." She started to slide to get off the bed.

Shit.

That's not what he wanted to do. In fact, it was the mere desire to have her there, that close to him, that was making him get so flustered. He hated his shyness sometimes. Time to be bold. Or at least bold, according to Jeff's standards.

He reached out and touched her arm, motioning for her to stay and lay back down.

"No... you don't... have to go."

Farah paused as he touched her arm and she felt her heart leap into her throat. Swallowing thickly, she nodded her head ever so slightly while moving to lay back. "Okay."

As she settled beside him, she looked over at him with no idea what to do next. It was an odd feeling for her because she used to know. At one time she would have known exactly what to do next but with Jeff, it wasn't different.

Suddenly she felt shy and that was new.

He carefully curled his arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him. He almost didn't want her to get too close because then she'd feel the pounding of his heartbeat through his chest. She'd hear how nervous he was. He hadn't ever really done anything with a woman since college when he had met Mia. He knew what turned her on, what turned her off, and all of her quirks like the back of his hand. It was weird, having to remember that not everyone was the same. Everyone had their own kinks.

He tilted his head and kissed her forehead gently, hoping to God he wasn't misreading everything.

As he curled his arms around her shoulders, her heart started to thud within the walls of her chest. She wasn't sure her heart had ever pounded this fast before and she knew it was because she was suddenly nervous. She had no ideas the kind of things he liked or anything really. Still, she didn't want to pull back.

As he kissed her forehead, she closed her eyes with a little smile before tilting her head back so her mouth could brush along the underside of his jaw.

He began biting the inside of his cheek as he felt her lips along his jaw. And suddenly, weirdly, he wished he had shaved that morning. He ran his fingers up and down her arm before tilting his head down a little, meeting her lips hesitantly. Almost like someone fumbling and feeling his way through the dark, his lips pressed themselves against hers, figuring out the shape of her mouth, the pressure he needed. It was like trying to learn how to walk again.

Maybe he felt like he was just learning how to walk but she felt like her breath was being taken away. Leaning up into the kiss, her mouth was warm and pliable against his as she kissed him back. Bringing a hand up along his arm, she found didn't mind the scrape of his facial hair against her skin but instead she let the kiss deepen as her tongue brushed teasingly against his lips as though seeking entrance.
